Trying to grow one on my all-time, most misunderstood and maligned vegetables—OKRA! I’ve got some pods so I’m stoked that I may actually produce something edible. In the mean time, I found some gorgeous pods at the market and steamed/sauteed them with a seasoned reduced tomato paste I’d made along with some ‘yard chard’. The results were simply fantastic! Took me back to my roots when we’d have a pot of some kind of green with okra, cornbread, and some sort of protein—or not. Yummylicious!
The beginnings of my food supply from my ‘toil in the soil’. Some of my tomatoes taste as interesting as their names: Frankenstein Black, Isis Candy, Kelloggs Breakfast, Indigo Apple, Chocolate Cherry..yummmm
Harvesting just some of the bounty I planted: lettuces, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, greens from my garden the other day; how is it that more people aren’t doing this? It seems so simple: buy/trade seeds, plant seeds, watch seeds grow into food to feed yourself and family. What’s missing here? No judgment, just reflection and frustration at being surrounded by a nation of “hungry” people.
I know I’m not the only one being affected by our recent chain of uber hot days; with little sleep or food (who can eat when it’s sooo hot!), I felt like our reigning Queen Slug (without the crown). Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate… On the other hand, my peppers, tomatoes and melon patch are all loving it!

First demo at Whole Foods Greenway in Tigard; lots of curious and adventuresome customers and an uber friendly staff; very customer-service oriented. Lots of taste testing and education about the line and the flavors. The store creates a ‘shopping experience’, not just ‘grocery shopping’. Stellar products, great atmosphere!
I highly recommend the movie ‘Chef’ if you want to be motivated, stimulated, and visually titillated. Good story about following your passion in our industry and about the human connection that food creates.
